The Short Answer: Where Do Penny Slots Pay Best in Las Vegas?

Off the Strip. Over the last 12 months, penny machines in the locals areas kept about 8.5% to 8.7% of what was played. On the Strip they kept 10.5%, and Downtown 10.6%.

Area (12 months to Aug 2026)1¢ (penny) machines keepPaid back to players
Rest of Clark County (Summerlin, Henderson and other locals areas)8.49%about 91.5%
North Las Vegas8.60%about 91.4%
Boulder Highway area8.72%about 91.3%
Las Vegas Strip10.53%about 89.5%
Downtown / Fremont Street10.60%about 89.4%

That gap adds up. For every $100 run through penny slots, Strip casinos keep about $10.53 on average, while Boulder Highway casinos keep about $8.72.

Are There Still Penny Slots in Vegas?

Yes, in almost every casino. But “penny” only describes the size of each credit, not the cost of a spin. Most modern penny machines charge per line or per bet multiplier, so a typical spin costs well over a penny. Check the minimum bet on the screen before you sit down, so a “penny” machine doesn’t surprise you.

Pennies vs. Bigger Machines

Here’s the part that surprises people: in every area of Las Vegas, $1 machines keep less than pennies. On the Strip, $1 machines kept 7.2% versus 10.5% for pennies. And Strip quarter machines are even tighter than pennies, at 11.4%.

So if your budget allows bigger bets, moving up to $1 machines gets you more back. If you’re here to stretch $40 over an evening, pennies are still the way to go. Just play them where they pay best.

How to Make Penny Slots Last

1. Set a Budget First

Decide what tonight’s slot money is before you sit down, and keep it separate from everything else.

2. Know What Your Bet Gets You

On some machines, the bonus features or the top jackpot need a bigger bet. Tap the help or paytable screen to see what the minimum bet actually plays for.

3. Join the Players Club

It’s free, and the points, free play and offers add value back on top of whatever the machine pays.

4. Play Off the Strip When You Can

Same pennies, better payback. If you have a car or a rideshare budget, the locals casinos give your money more spins.
