About the Real Neil Diamond
Neil Diamond wrote his way into American music twice over — first as a Brill Building songwriter whose credits others made famous (I'm a Believer for The Monkees), then as one of the biggest live draws of the seventies and eighties in his own right. Sweet Caroline, released in 1969, has outlived nearly everything else from that year by becoming a singalong: ballparks, weddings, and every bar at closing time.
His Las Vegas history runs deep. He headlined the Aladdin in the early seventies and returned to the city repeatedly across five decades, and his 1972 Hot August Night — recorded in Los Angeles but pure showroom in spirit — is still the template for how a solo performer holds a large room with nothing but songs and a band.
In January 2018 Diamond announced he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and retired from touring, cutting short his fiftieth-anniversary tour. He has made only rare appearances since. There is no Neil Diamond show to see any more.
King of Diamonds is the Las Vegas tribute that fills that gap — the catalogue performed live at the Athena Showlounge, built around the songs rather than an impression.
